From Sept 2011 to May 2012 a group of parents & pre-school children from Surestart, Bowthorpe in Norwich, worked alongside artists Sophie Fox and Mandy Roberts.
As part of ‘Spontaneous Communities’ The group took part in imaginative, playful activities, inspired by the ‘Spontaneous City’ artworks.
Activities included explorations into installations, mark-making, collage, music and role play.
They had a picnic at the foot of one of the ‘Spontaneous City’ artworks that became a collage, which was then ritualistically wrapped around the tree to mirror the London Fieldworks artwork above.
The group brought the trees indoors, played with leaves, shadows, twigs and branches.
There were lots of building and stacking of boxes. They played with enormous boxes, so big that we could make homes of them. And worked together as a group to make a huge tower out of tiny boxes, with parents and children working side by side together.
There were no fixed outcomes in these sessions; the emphasis was on experimentation and creative play in a relaxed and informal environment and all leading to some form of imaginative play.
